Tipping in Costa Rica
In Costa Rica, tipping is not generally expected in most services. Many times it is already included in the bill, but an additional tip is always appreciated, even though it is not mandatory.
If you’d like to leave a tip, here’s a quick guide:
Transportation
For airport transfers, a tip of $5–$10 USD is appropriate.
For short trips such as hotel or clinic rides, $1–$2 USD is fine, though not required.
Tips can be given in either Costa Rican colones or U.S. dollars—both are accepted.
Restaurants
All restaurants automatically include a 10% service charge in the bill. This fee is shared among staff, not exclusively the waiter.
If you want to leave an additional tip directly for the waiter, you can leave it in cash on the table or hand it to them (the most common way).
It is usually not possible to add an extra tip when paying by card.
For exceptional service, an additional ₡1,000–₡3,000 colones (approx. $2–$6 USD) is appreciated. This also applies to spas, medical centers, beauty salons, and tourist facilities.
Parking Attendants (“Wachiman”)
In many parking areas, you’ll see informal attendants known as “wachiman” (from “watch-man”), who look after your car in exchange for a small tip.
When parking, it’s customary to greet them or signal that you’ll tip upon return.
Upon leaving, a tip of ₡200–₡600 colones (approx. $0.40–$1.00 USD) is appropriate.
